Earth and space science educators will love this site. All media is NOT copyrighted (but more information about a few exceptions can be found by clicking on the Copyright link in the bottom left hand corner). Teachers can use this as a resource for science education. Astronomy is a difficult subject to teach without images, video, and audio because so many of the concepts and objects can't be seen from our perspective here on Earth. Students could use the media on the site to create a glog about a certain planet, being an astronaut, how space shuttles are made, etc. The search allows you to specify exactly what you need to research.

soberleWhat’s there: Searchable online database of NASA photos (actually, not just photos but audio and video, too). You can get high-res versions of many images of the solar system (and beyond), space flights, aircraft, shock waves at Mach 1.1, and other interesting stuff.
Using the photos: The photos are in the public domain unless noted. You’re not permitted to use the NASA logo, though. And if you use any NASA material for commercial purposes, take care that your use doesn’t imply NASA’s endorsement of your goods, services, or activities. You should also be aware of right of publicity or privacy issues if an identifiable person (an astronaut, say) is in a photo you want to use for commercial purposes. -

Katrina Johnston SchultzThis is the Boolean search engine for the photos, movies, audio files, etc. that NASA has posted on their site. All of their stuff is copyright free (click here to see their disclosure). As with Flickr, there are endless possibilties to using the images! In chemistry we talk alot about energy and how colored light is just a reflection of a specific amount of energy. I could give my students a problem where they had to identify the color that should be given off by a particular star (based on energy data) and ask them to add a photo of an appropriately colored star to their work.

Janell LarsonThis site includes still images; audio files; and video for educator and student use.
The NASA Image eXchange (NIX) is a web-based search engine for searching one or more of NASA's online multimedia collections. Searching is performed using keywords. NIX returns thumbnail sized images, textual descriptions, image numbers, links to higher resolution images, and links to the organization that stores each image.
Students could use the images to do multi-media projects about the planets. -
