build up an argument or description of an event, person or historical period by placing items in a virtual box. What items, for example, would you put in a box to describe your life; the life of a Victorian Servant or Roman soldier; or to show that slavery was wrong and unnecessary? You can display anything from a text file to a movie. You can also view and comment on the museum boxes submitted by others.

Our inspiration
Thomas Clarkson The project was inspired by the anti-slavery campaigner - Thomas Clarkson, who did exactly as described above.
Thomas Clarkson's Box He carried around a box of items (ranging from African produce to diagrams of transportation ships) to illustrate his arguments during his campaign.

masona7My tool this week is called Museum Box. This online platform is a graphic presentation program that is structured so that related ideas, points, etc. can be placed together. While the platform itself isn’t necessarily revolutionary (there are many other programs where you can add text, videos, images, links, etc. to a visual organizer), the real benefit of this particular one is the many ways in which it can be used. On their ‘About’ page they stated that Museum Box “allows you to build up an argument or description of an event, person or historical period by placing items in a virtual box.” This has tremendous potential for application in the classroom. Essentially any argument or connection that you orchestrate can be represented in your created Museum Box. The project then serves essentially as a concept map and a showcase for your work with multiple layers to expound upon your points. While you have to create an account to save your work, I have attached an example I found at https://cis220spring12.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/mbox21.png below.
This technology is insanely versatile, but one of the many possible implementations is that it could be used in a senior Government class to satisfy the SOL requirement GOVT.2:
“The student will demonstrate knowledge of the political philosophies that shaped the development of Virginia and United States constitutional government by
a) describing the development of Athenian democracy and the Roman republic;
b) explaining the influence of the Magna Carta, the English Petition of Rights, and the English
Bill of Rights;
c) examining the writings of Hobbes, Locke, and Montesquieu;
d) explaining the guarantee of the “rights of Englishmen” set forth in the charters of the
Virginia Company of London;
e) analyzing the natural rights philosophies expressed in the Declaration of Independence;
f) examining George Mason’s Virginia Declaration of Rights, Thomas Jefferson’s Virginia
Statute for Religious Freedom, and James Madison’s leadership role in securing adoption
of the Bill of Rights by the First Congress.”
Students could outline the different views, perspectives, and documents in their respective Museum Boxes to study the material and see the development of the democratic political ideas that shaped our governmental structures.
This resource can help students visually conceptualize their thoughts into a project. When combined with assignments like the example above, it can also promote a certain level of student agency as they conduct research on things that interest them (within the parameters of the assignment of course). I think that the projects created on this platform would not only reinforce the material with visual aids, but would also serve as a great study guide for the students as well.
Museum Box is no stranger to education. The website also has a ‘Teachers’ page with information about how to get their school registered, class set up on Museum Box, etc. They also have useful information not directly tied to the program; like the copyright information link. Museum Box is intended to be used in the classroom, and I think that educators should consider using it in their instruction. -

ataylor22This website would not be something that I could use in my classroom unless I was teaching students in middle school to high school levels, but it shows a great way to connect Social Studies with Comm. Arts. It lets students create their own Museum box to back up there reasonings for presentations, etc. Students get to choose their pictures and sound clips among many other things.
