Mary Fran TorpeyScience teachers know that trying to teach teens about infectious diseases, germs, and viruses can be a real challenge. MedMyst, however, will get teens interested and engaged. Rice University's Center for Technology for Teaching and Learning has turned these topics into five highly creative online learning games.
Each of the five MedMyst “Missions” requires the Flash 5 plug-in and takes 30-45 minutes to accomplish. (There is also a Spanish language version available.) There are so many challenges and variables included with each mission that they can be played many times or played different ways by different students. Each mission is designed to teach teens about different aspects of disease control and microbiology.
Start your tour by learning about the Reconstructors and how best to navigate through each mission by clicking on the “Game Features” link on the navbar. Each mission builds on the previous ones, so start experiencing them by clicking on “Mission 1.” Don’t pass up the “For Teachers” section. Here you’ll find PDF teacher’s guides and quizzes for each mission, information on how to order MedMyst magazines for students, and detailed learning objectives. Finally, the “Links” section not only supports the games, but provides teens with excellent “learn more about it” Web resources -
