  • Twitter () and Facebook () have exploded, and you can’t ignore them,” says Kelly McBride, ethics group leader at the Poynter Institute, who gets a call about once a week from a television station or a newspaper with questions on the ethical issues involving the use of social media. She says journalists’ attitudes toward social media tools range from presuming nothing bad can happen to being terrified.

      “Assume that everything you write or receive on a social media site is public and knowable to everyone with access to a computer.”

    • The Wall Street Journal recently added new rules for online conduct, such as not friending confidential sources or getting into Web-related arguments with critics, according to E&P’s report
    • how do you define ‘arguments online with critics?’ An intelligent debate and exchange of ideas is healthy, but a name-calling flame war is not. How do you decide where to draw that line?”
    • largely relies on its journalists’ good judgment and common sense not to embarrass the paper or “impair their journalistic independence” with what they post on Twitter, Facebook, MySpace (), blogs or other new media.
    • “It’s a mistake to ignore MySpace or any other social networking phenomenon as a resource. Although the technology is relatively new, many of the challenges are quite old. Journalists have a responsibility to ensure they publish the truth,” she wrote in a column. “As a journalistic tool, MySpace does not work when it becomes a cheap shortcut or a voyeuristic window. But when we add it to the full kit of reporting tools we possess, it becomes a new resource for contacting sources, taking our audience to a place they can’t or won’t go and telling a more nuanced truth.”
    • Just like the telephone didn’t replace the face-to-face meeting over coffee, and e-mail didn’t replace the telephone, social media doesn’t replace other forms of connecting with people.

    • The Society of Professional Journalists’ Code of Ethics remains unchanged and does not specifically mention social media tools. Andy Schotz, chair of SPJ’s Ethics Committee, said in an e-mail interview there hasn’t been any talk of updating or expanding the code to address social networking.

      
      

      “I think there’s ample guidance in the code as it is. The concepts are most important, not the medium or the technology,” he told me.

    • McBride offers tips for using tools such as Twitter and how to avoid letting it get out of hand.

      
      

      1. Use social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook because familiarity with the tools is important.

      
      

      2. Always be mindful that you represent more than just yourself. Even if you are an individual journalist, the stakes are higher than with other professions.

      
      

      3. Presume your tweets, status updates or other content on these sites will go further in terms of reach than you intend for it to go.

      
      

      4. Ask your boss to follow you on Twitter because it’s a good accountability measure.
