most of my new followers were either people I was already friends with, people I’m loosely acquainted with, or people who read Mashable and are somehow involved in the social media industry. Returning these follows was a pleasure, because it kept me better connected to the conversation going on in our space.

someone who is following thousands of people, with only a couple hundred following back. In this case, the new follower seems to be a web design studio in Beverly Hills. While I can’t prove it, I have a feeling that this person used a bot to automatically follow me (and a lot of other people) in an effort to take advantage of the fact that a lot of people will simply return the follow – in turn giving this person a new platform to pump their marketing message.

Google “twitter friend adder” and you can quickly find numerous tools that will perform this task.
-
Twitter, I hope you’re listening and have taken notes on how this type of software can destroy the conversation on social networks. I’d gladly complete a CAPTCHA with each new follow to avoid having Twitter become yet another spammy social network.
