In chap 89 of Moby-Dick, Melville describes the doctrine of “Fast-Fish and Loose-Fish,” which governs possession of whales on the high seas. A fast-fish is claimed, or fastened to a ship. Any fish that isn’t fastened, is up for grabs, or loose.
