erindulaResearch skills are important for students to learn. It is vital to teach the students is how to use reliable resources online. Unfortunately, there are not a lot of good options for my English language learners. This website allows any site and text to be adapted and presented in a language friendly format. Towards the end of a unit I might have the students create a Google slide presentation from research they attained using this website. I also have a link to a digital version of the class textbook available to all of them online so the ELL students could read the textbook in a supportive format by viewing that webpage through the lens of Lingro. The drawback of this tool is that several online texts I tried did not work.

eweisslingerLingro is absolutely the "coolest dictionary known to hombre"! Lingro is appropriate for all grade levels. Lingro requires the use of a computer, laptop, iPad, tablet, or smartphone. Lingro allows students to input the URL of a web page they wish to read and then have the ability to click on any word to see its definition. When students read complex text, they very often skip over unfamiliar words that can cause them to lose critical meaning. Lingro is a valuable tool for struggling readers and ELLs, and also can be used in a variety of languages.
Intended Use: My students will use Lingro as they read our on-line textbook and research topics for writing assignments.toolkit Weisslinger teaching tools dictionary struggling readers ELL visual special education education words

jennifergarganLingro is a website connects words on a web page to a dictionary automatically. The reader copies and pastes the link to the page they want to view into Lingro. Then it transforms the page and makes every word on the page "clickable." Students can click on words and be linked to definitions. Some definitions may not be completely accurate given the context of the passage, but overall it is a helpful tool. This tool would be best used by students with limited vocabularies. ELL students are primarily who would benefit from this. It should be noted though that the definitions are not always simplistic and may confuse some readers, especially young readers or students with low ELD levels.

anroberson06On the Lingro website, you enter the URL of a page you want to read, and all of the words on that page become hyperlinks that link to a definition and a translation of the word. This would be a helpful tool for all students, especially ELLs, as they are reading articles with vocabulary just beyond their English language skills. I also envision students writing their senior research paper using this resource. Seniors are expected to find scholarly, academic articles related to their topics, but often these articles contain high-level vocabulary. Finally, the previously unknown words can be added to a wordlist for the student to study to increase her vocabulary.

Breanne Quistallows you to view any foreign language website through its own online browser, allowing you then to click on any word on the screen to find out its meaning in English or your chosen language. Not only that, it remembers which words you clicked and then tests you… a fantastic resource for language learners.

Angie SaylorLingro is a fantastic collaborative dictionary and translation service that combines open dictionaries on the web with user contributions under a CreativeCommons license. It’s particularly useful for people reading in a second language who just need help with a few unusual words now and again. Anyone will find the basic two-click dictionary lookup feature useful though.

langleemLingro helps students identify meanings of unknown words on a specific website, as well as provides translation of words to different languages. This can be used for conducting research in the classroom. I would use Lingro in the classroom while students were researching various in my social studies sections, especially ancient history. This will also be helpful to my ELL who has a difficult time with English words he is unfamiliar with.

Valerie KrauserLingro is a site that anyone can use to look up a word. Since the site saves the words you look up, you can go back and review and study those words as a refresher. This site is great for ELL students because words can be translated in up to 11 languages, but I also think it would be great for students, especially in the older grades, to use as a dictionary for vocabulary assessments or for writing research papers. There a variety of uses for the site that could benefit both ELL students and native English speakers.

teachergregLingo is a tool that allows you to modify exiting websites in order to obtain information quickly. A website address could be entered into Lingro and it results in a website in which every word is clickable. This will be helpful for all students as they are researching material on their own for assignments. They will be able to easily click on words that are not familiar to them. Without even having to leave the page, the students will have all the information they need. The will especially be useful for ELL students who may need assistance as they are researching information. Instead of becoming frustrated by not understanding particular words, they can stay on track and define words instantly on the page they are on. Words can evn be translated into their language.
Example:
This could be a useful tool if a student is researching difficult material like Shakespeare. In entered in the following website link in Lingro: http://www.folgerdigitaltexts.org/?chapter=5&play=Ham&loc=p7
http://lingro.com/translate/http://www.folgerdigitaltexts.org/?chapter=5&play=Ham&loc=p7
This is the electronic text version of Hamlet. The student could click on any difficult word and look it up while they are reading. These will prevent frustration from not understanding words.Lingro clickable website instant define translate translation language tools reference learning

jamesmckennaThis resource solves the problem of students reading texts above their reading level by making every word clickable to define it. With this I could give students a difficult text and allow them to work at their own pace rather. For ELL students the applications are clear, and just from some brainstorming I can already picture a few different cases where this could make a real difference. For example, a mid level ELL student could take their test on a computer so that any words on the test that confuse them could be identified. All I would have to do is upload the test beforehand and do a little work with the formatting. There are still problems involved, since word meaning is complex and a definition might not always help. Words have double meanings, context specific interactions and changes based on tone. ELL students often find this part of reading to be the most difficult, since a definition can only get you so far. With the proper support however, students can overcome these context problems.

Douglas PlanteLingro is a free online tool which analyzes and reproduces a webpage, embeds a link into every word that reveals a dictionary definition for that word. The design is simple, and the definition and translation popups are very clean, unobtrusive, and can float and be moved around on the page. Users can have as many word bubbles open as they like, or they can "offload" words into a personal word list to analyze and study later. It could be difficult for younger students to master, as it requires some textual and meta knowledge about how dictionaries work. But for upper elementary students, especially ELL students struggling with more advanced vocabulary or idioms, it can be a valuable tool. The website is compatible with tablets, and therefore has potential use as an "always on" technology in rooms where students can be equipped with iPads. A variety of languages are available as part of the translation system, allowing ELL students to share their native words with the English speaking students in the classroom, encouraging cross-language transfer. An ideal use for this tool in my own classroom would be to create logins for individual students, and then include the use of Lingro as part of normal web-based research and information gathering. As a teacher I could then review student word lists, and look for patterns in what words students may find challenging. This website would also be compatible with any web-based interactive fiction authoring environment, such as Twine or InkleWriter, making those sites more accessible to ELL students.

kiangjLingro is an online dictionary resource that also allows the capability to upload text files like Word and PDF formats for teachers to share with students. While students review content through Lingro, they have the capability to pick words out to find their built-in pop-up definitions instantly. Lingro is a fabulous tool for making sure that students understand the material that is shared. With the convenience of a built-in dictionary, students can interact and fully comprehend what they are reading.
For my robotics classes, I share digital handouts with students that are in PDF format. To help with the comprehension of the material, Lingro would prove to be a great tool for students to use so that they can become more independent with their readings. Often times, students would not understand something and ask me for definitions or look online for a dictionary. With the use of Lingro, the convenience of the built-in dictionary will both streamline that process and increase student productivity in my class. If they can read and understand the material faster, the class can progress more smoothly.translation language vocabulary tools reference learning toolkit Kiang

Kristie OrtmanWebsite that you go through in order to translate other websites. You can click on words to get definitions and use the thesaurus as well. Several languages including Spanish, but not an extensive list. This would be a great resource for students that are below grade level in reading when they are doing online research. They would be able to use the dictionary piece to define words that don't make sense in the text that is on the screen.
