Dan Lyons wrote a brilliant analysis of the Facebook’s purchase of Instagram in "Newsweek".

Do you still buy CDs, print books, do you still believe landlines are best?
Then you’re already in the rearview mirror.
-
The iPad is killing the laptop. People no longer bother to bring computers on the road. And the smartphone population will soon exceed the number of PCs.
-
The MP3 is just about history. Only old farts like the RIAA bother to combat illicit

acquisition of them
-
You don’t need the right space to make music, just a space.
-
And in this world, it’s not about making a splash, but being a lake.
-
Everybody wants their YouTube clip to go viral. Virality is a thing of the past. It’s worse than a one hit wonder.
-
You see Coachella has become a rite of passage.
-
The girls were wearing bikinis even though it was fifty degrees with sporadic raindrops. The boys were wearing costumes, everything from space helmets to raccoon hats. They came to see and be seen. And to dance to the music.
-
It’s a different culture. The baby boomers are about winning, becoming a shining star, dominating. Gen-X’ers are just pissed they didn’t get to sip at the trough, the boomers ruined it for them.
And Gen-Y and the Millennials are nothing like their forebears. They want to be a member of the group, they want to PARTICIPATE!
-
If you think it takes money to make it, you know nothing
-
This is a radical change. It’s less about being on stage and being a star than being with your homies in the audience having fun.
-
If I ran Coachella, I’d eliminate the old acts. And the new too. Everyone with a guitar, everyone with a band. Because most people just don’t care.
-
If you read Malcolm Gladwell’s "Outliers", and most people trumpeting the fact that they’ve put in 10,000 hours have not, you know that timing/environment is everything. You can do the same exact thing and in one era you can starve and another you can be a billionaire.
-
In a world where most apps are free, musicians complain that people are stealing their music or Spotify doesn’t pay much. They can’t see the future. One in which just getting people to check you out is the most difficult task
-
It doesn’t have to be this way, but if you put business first, you’re probably a lousy musician.
-
But when Swedish House Mafia took the stage, you were reminded of a rally in Nazi Germany or the U.S.S.R. You know, you’ve seen the pictures, endless people and massive power, scary to those not there.
-
And electronic dance music is scary to the old guard.
-
Madeon was spinning.
-
I guarantee you ninety plus percent of my audience has no idea who this guy is. I certainly didn’t.
But the kids did.
-
We live in an attention economy. Where the most important element is access. If you’re not available to everybody at a very low price, if not free, you’re destined for the scrapheap.
-
So, unless you’re incredible, go to work at 7-11, go to work for the government, play it safe.
-
You can’t just accept safe."
-
That’s what you’ve got to know, this electronic music works. It’s owned by the kids. And it’s got nothing to do with what came before, record companies are irrelevant. Hell, Swedish House Mafia is headlining Coachella AND THEY’VE NEVER PUT OUT A PROPER ALBUM!
-
That’s John Krafcik speaking, the CEO of Hyundai Motor America
-
Think about that. You’re sitting at home crafting ten tunes to make you feel good. To make you believe you’re a musician.
No, a musician plays music. It’s just that simple. And recordings have become secondary to live because it’s all about the experience, that’s what the younger generation treasures
-
Are you taking a risk?
-
Music is first and foremost about innovation. Taking risks, creating something new that strikes people’s hearts.
-
If you think music appeals to its audience, I’m laughing.
-
Here you’ve got an entire industry with contempt for its audience. Music is overpriced and producers can’t stop railing about theft. Concert tickets are stratospheric and you can’t get a good one. Do you really think going down this road is going to pay dividends?

PhilThere are indelible television moments. When there’s only before and after. Michael Jackson’s "Motown 25" moonwalk was one of those events. Akin to the landing of Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on the moon over a decade before.
