This has driven me crazy. However, if you run Apple's DVD player app first, HandBrake works beautifully

I swear: This is completely true. I have done dozens of rigorous A/B tests on multiple Macs and proved it. On Leopard 10.5.1 with HandBrakeCLI v0.9.1, I can state with full confidence:
* If you run the Apple DVD-player application before HB, then HB runs successfully.
* If you run HB before (or without) the DVD-player app, you get the ERROR:...DVDReadBlocks messages (a lot!)
