Alex HalavaisFireFTP is an add-on for Firefox. It's the FPT client I'm going to use for this class. This bookmark has an FAQ for installing and using the client, which like I said before, I really need because I've never done this before.

hese days you can never be too careful. If the server you are connecting to supports it, you can make a secure connection to your FTP session much like the same way you have a secure connection when you do online banking.

- For Mac OS X, you'll need to take an extra step and install the putty package. Honestly, it's a huge install (1 GB+) which will take about half an hour to do (or more if you need to download Xcode). Unfortunately, there isn't an easier way to do this on a Mac. Anyway, here are the steps to follow:
- Install the Xcode 3.0 Developer Tools found on your Apple's Install Disc in the "Optional Installs" folder (Optional Installs->Xcode Tools->XcodeTools.mpkg)
or online here (beware: it's a 1 GB download) - Then you need to install MacPorts (a ~400 KB install)
- Open up a Terminal (Applications->Utilities->Terminal)
- At the prompt type: sudo port install putty
- (you may be asked for a password)
- Voila!
- Install the Xcode 3.0 Developer Tools found on your Apple's Install Disc in the "Optional Installs" folder (Optional Installs->Xcode Tools->XcodeTools.mpkg)

What is initial directories?
Initial directories will associate your FTP connection with a specific directory for either local, remote or both file systems. That way, when you select the account, FireFTP will automagically plop you in the directory that you want to be when working with that particular account.
What is "Keep directories in sync while navigating"?

How do I install SFTP on Mac OS X?

s. It looks at which files are missing on your local machine that the FTP server has, which files are missing on the FTP server that your machine has, and also compares file sizes to see if they're different. Importantly, however, it does not actually compare file content to see if there are differences nor does it currently compare files by the dates they were modified. This feature is useful for web designers, for example, in keeping their local and remote copies of files in sync with each other.
The various buttons available below the file list in the Compare Directories dialog (hey, that's kinda fun to say :) will allow you to move checkboxes for a multiple set of files at once to another column of choice.
