      I do think GWave came out early. It was a bit too Google in approach, too geek-oriented.
      After reading all this I don't see how I can't do most of these things with a good wiki like Confluence.
      
      One thing I see coming is Twitter/FB pushback - we can't always have these instant tap-taps going on during our work-day.
      Dashboards and summaries of what is going on are more valuable to busy people. So as long as Wave allows for easy and out-of-the-box dashboard summarization of various activities, that's fine.

  • • In your average corporate environment, though, this happens all the time. People work on documents, presentations, etc. They have lengthy discussions over email. Pieces of work bounce back and forth across one or multiple organisations for weeks before they’re finalised. People are brought on to the conversation late in the day. Attachments get lost. Inboxes fill up and emails bounce. It’s a major pain.
    • Google Wave solves that by giving exactly the same view to everyone, regardless of when they’ve been added.
    • Attaching a 10MB file to a Wave is no problem at all.
    • You never need to re-forward an attachment to someone. When you add new people to the conversation, they get access to all the attachments right away.
    • Google Wave resolves this by allowing clear, obvious threading.
    • With Wave, no such problem – you can just edit the original text and make those changes. If the person who submitted that document wants to review your changes, they can play them back.

    • It’s a tool for getting work done.

      Problem is, e-mail does have too many uses aside from work-related ones, and wave as intended is pretty much catered just for that specific segment. If that's not addressed it's never going to gain much more momentum than, say, basecamp (a little more is kind of expectable from its free nature; people get signed up for everything free)

      Google's overall complexity makes predicting where Wave will go impossible. Basecamp and Google are degrees of magnitude apart and as such it is anybody's guess what will happen. I think you ask the right question: what will wave do to email behavior. And will its use expand into private lives as we begin to use it daily on a professional. Personal and professional will mashup, then the tipping point will happen much as it has in Twitter.
  • In the meantime, we should stop judging it as a social tool and start looking at how we can use it for real work. Invite your colleagues to it, and get working.

  Ah but is not a 'geek' in the eye of the beholder? Usually when a person uses the word geek they're referring to someone generally knowledgeable about technology but especially so in their personal field of interest. For instance both a music 'geek' who is into music / synth software, and a video game geek who is into hardware / overclocking will exclude the other when using the 'geek' term, generally speaking.
