  • TechRadium, which makes emergency-notification software, filed suit against  Blackboard last month in U.S. District Court in Texas, claiming that similar  software sold by Blackboard violates TechRadium's patent. Blackboard began  selling notification software this year when it purchased NTI Group, maker of a  system used at more than 200 colleges.
  • Blackboard filed a patent in 1999 for software with features that many college  leaders say were already in use by other colleges and companies. This year a  federal judge in Texas sided with Blackboard in its patent fight against a  competitor called Desire2Learn, banning Desire2Learn from selling its  then-current version of its software in the United States.
