The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation says 21 years after agreeing to remove radioactive waste at the Western New York Nuclear Service Center in West Valley, the federal government has not met expectations.
The state agency released a report May 7, saying the U.S. Department of Energy has yet to reach the first regulatory milepost -- the completion of a final environmental impact statement at the facility, which has been closed since 1975.
