Platinum is extracted from catalytic converters by dissolving with cyanide, filtering the leachate, then boiling the leachate to precipitate the platinum. This is quite dangerous, as cyanides are toxic even in small quantities and the fumes from boiling them are the same as gas chamber poison gas.
