  • Earlier last week, South Korea's Fair Trade Commission found Intel had violated antitrust law and fined it $US25 million ($26 million).


    In 2005, Japan also found antitrust violations by Intel, which agreed to change its practices there. And in Europe, the investigation is expected to be complete by the end of the year.

  • AMD also is pursuing a private antitrust action, filed in Delaware in 2005, but the trial date has been pushed back to February 2010.
  • ccording to lawyers and others close to the investigation, the commission and its chairman, Republican William Kovacic, concluded recently that subpoenas were necessary, because some PC makers, fearing retaliation, were reluctant to provide data voluntarily.
  • Antitrust lawyer John Pierce, of Bryan Cave LLP, said any ruling by the agency would be likely to focus on forcing changes to Intel's behaviour, and the private suit would focus more on possible monetary damages for the company's actions.
