  • Layout Tips

       

    Handouts should be easy to read and clearly convey the message. A handout is

     

    meant to communicate information, not overwhelm the reader.

     

    Page Layout

       

    • Visually, the center of the page is the strongest area.

     

    • Information should be organized for fast skimming.

     

    • Use flush left justification to avoid raggedness.

     

    • Don’t start new topics at the bottom of a page.

     

    • Lines should have 14 words or less.

       

    Fonts

       

    • When deciding on the font and text style, consider the mood you want to

       

    create.

       

    • The rule of thumb is no more than two fonts.

     

    • Font size should not be smaller than 12 point.

       

    Text Style

       

    • Italic is recommended for emphasizing words within text.

     

    • Only underline text for hyperlinks.

     

    • ALL CAPS is shouting, especially ALL CAPS IN BOLD!

       

    Graphics

       

    • Pictures quickly draw in the reader.

     

    • Use straight lines to link topics visually.

     

    • Simple line drawings are easier to perceive than photos.

     

    • Use tables, lists and numbers only when necessary.

     

    • Use bullets, boxes, and clipart to provide emphasis. Be careful though, it

       

    is possible to over do it.

     

    White Space

       

    • Give the eyes a rest; too much text and graphics can turn a reader away.

     

    • Make sure there is space around text and graphics. If the document is

       

    extremely dense, trainees may not even look at the handout.

     

    Key points to remember when creating handouts:

       

    • Keep it simple.

     

    • Communicate the concept.
