There's not a huge amount of information available yet on Vivitar's forthcoming SD-card camcorder but we do know it will be launched by the end of April at one of Vivitar's more, er, favourable price points.

The DVR565HD records in H.264/MPEG4 high definition at 720p with a frame rate of 30 frames per second, plays back at 1080i and comes complete with HDMI cable for playback on HD ready TVs.

To be available in silver and black and described as "compact in shape and size" the camcorder has a 3-inch flip out colour display, a rechargeable lithium ion battery and will support SD cards up to 4GB. We'll bring you more when it launches.

  • do you have a price for the vivitar dvr565hd camcorder as i have just bought one from the us have a felling i have been riped off thanks Posted by veronica shaw, uk
  • I paid £48 plus £9.99 delivery on eBay from ecomcameras.co.uk around Christmas 2008.

I'm quite impressed with its ease of use and video quality although the T/W/OK switch has recently fractured and jams.

Attempting to organise a return by emailing support@vivitar.com just results in my emails being returned as 'server unavailable'.

Although I feel capable of disassembling it and attempting my own repair I don't see why I should as it's still under warranty so I'm hoping that someone, on reading this, will offer an alternative contact for returns to Vivitar.

  • My further investigations reveal that not only has the company that I bought the camera from ceased trading on eBay and is uncontactable at its email address (server unavailable etc) Vivitar went bankrupt last year and so has its parent company, Syntax-Brillian.
In what appears to be a complicated game of "pass the parcel" the rights to the brand name Vivitar was acquired by Sakar but responsibilty for service issues appears to have been avoided like the plague.

Ah, well. Now I know why it was such a bargain.

So, [Thinks: "Where did I put my jewellers' screwdrivers?"].
